🧠 HAM-D is a clinician-rated scales used to measure symptom severity in depression used in psychiatry, research and specialist settings to track baseline severity and response to treatment. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, also called HAM-D or HDRS, is a clinician-administered scale used to assess the severity of depressive symptoms. It is not a diagnostic test for depression, but it can help monitor how symptoms change over time.
⚠️ Important: HAM-D should be completed by a trained clinician. It should not replace a full mental health assessment, risk assessment or clinical judgement.
HAM-D is most useful when repeated over time, for example before and after psychological therapy, antidepressant treatment or specialist review. A falling score suggests improvement, but the patient’s function, safety, sleep, appetite and subjective wellbeing remain just as important.
